SWIMMING POOL HEATER SYSTEM GUIDE
When you own a pool you’ll need to shop for pool heaters at one time or another; even in very hot climates it’s important to keep the water warm enough to swim and when the temperature is off by even a few degrees this can make it unpleasant and unwelcoming.
As with all accessories, you’ll need to choose carefully between pool heaters and will have many options from which to choose. In some cases, it may be obvious when it comes to your choice because you’ll want to ensure it can heat the amount of water your pool holds and is compatible with the other working elements of your pool. Your manufacturer may have certain recommendations as well when it comes to pool heaters and you may want to consider starting with your owner’s manual when it’s time to choose a new one.
To help you decide on the one that is best for you, consider a few simple tips about pool heaters and how to find the one that’s going to work well without breaking your budget.
Consider your budget as well but don’t assume the cheapest pool heaters are the best, or go for the most expensive. Cheaper items may not last as long and the most expensive may have too much power that you don’t really need. Typically mid-range pool heaters meant for your pool size are going to work fine, if they’re maintained properly.
Currently, gas-fired pool heaters are the most popular. New models are becoming more and more efficient all the time. A major advantage of gas heating is that there is no restriction on use caused by weather conditions. In other words, a gas pool heater can be used all year round. They use either propane or natural gas with natural being the cheaper option. Gas pool heaters simply circulate water from the pool through a heat exchanger which is heated by burning of the supplied gas. The life expectancy tends to be lower than other types of pool heater but recent advances in technology are improving their longevity. Typically you can expect at least five years from a gas pool heater.
Remember when selecting a pool heater that these are just recommendations. You can always size down from the recommended heater – but this will mean that it will take longer for your heater to heat your pool to the desired temperature and longer running times can mean more costly energy bills. On the other hand, you can size up from the recommendation which will mean you pool/spa will heat faster and the shorter running times will mean more savings on your energy costs! Also, you should take into consideration your pool environment. If you live in a naturally warm locale, the recommended size or smaller may work for you just fine. If you are in a colder climate, you may want to consider going with a slightly higher BTU heater. Also, are you heating just a pool, or are you also heating a spa? If you are heating a spa, you may want to invest in a larger heater so that your spa can be heated to optimal temperatures quickly for use. Here is a chart to help you decide which heater would be appropriate for your pool situation.
